I have been working as a professional cleaner for several years now and I now clean large holiday homes and air b n b.
Here are my top tips on things I wished I known when I started. That I have learnt along the way.
Don't buy White Towels
I thought that buying white towels was the norm because all other holidays had them right? The towels looked crisp and comfy and aesthetically pleasing. However I soon discovered the downside.
Fake tan and make up would soon ruin them and became stained. Every after washing the stains were incredibly hard to remove and needed replacing. As it no longer looked presentable to the guests.
I was advised to buy grey towels and it was a game changer. I have not had any that has stained and they seem to wash better too!
They were still the same make and brand - Royal Egyptian Cotton 700 GSM. But in my experience they are more forgiving
Make Up Wipes
Another simple trick is to leave makeup wipes by the sink. If the guests have something specifically designed for make up removal, then they are less likely to reach for the lovely towels!
Have a Secret Stash
Some guests will use every consumable or towel available.
Keep a cupboard with a few toilet rolls, towels, tea towels, dishwasher tablets. If a guest contacts you because they genuinely need more towels or dishwasher tablets, you can simply let them know where the cupboard is and give them access. If the guests know about it then they are very likely to use it and then you are replenishing 2 places
Outdoor Furniture
If you're buying furniture for a holiday property's garden, make sure it is genuinely designed to cope with being outdoors — particularly with British weather.
Something may look perfect in photographs, but if cushions or fabrics are regularly exposed to rain and damp conditions, mould can quickly become a problem.
And remember: you can't assume guests will put outdoor furniture away when it starts raining.
Choose outdoor furniture and cushions that are designed for the conditions they'll actually experience, and have a clear system for where cushions should be stored between uses.
