Summers' here!
So are the hot sun, the outdoor barbeques, and the pool parties.
So are house files!
While you start welcoming the guests, opening the windows to bring in the fresh air, the house flies become the non-disclosed immigrants that enter your house and the kitchen. The heat seems to bring in the worst insect population, and these pesky flies will flood your home in numbers.
A potential disease career, getting rid of these files will be one of the biggest challenges you will face during the summer. House flies and blow flies are the two most likely culprits that will take away the sanity in your kitchen because they are seeking a food source.
Why do they stay?
When flies seep through the wall cracks, open doors, and windows, it is a challenge to get them out. You'll imagine that closing the exit points would be the fix, but it is far worse.
When you seal the windows, they search for refuge inside the kitchen. Eventually, they will end up in your garbage, wall cracks, or even attic. While most of these flies die, house flies might end up breeding in anything sitting out - including meat.
Because they carry bacteria, they are likelier to transmit diseases if they come in contact with the food you eat. Unknowingly you might end up contracting diseases because you couldn't address your fly problem.
What needs to be done?
Let's face it - flies are a nuisance and can cause much harm. So it is best to take measures to prevent an infestation at home, in the kitchen. There are two ways to tackle the spread of flies - the natural way and the use of pesticides and chemicals.
This article will tell you how you can handle a fly invasion.
The Organic Way
Herbs and Flowers
Planting herbs and flowers in your garden can be an ideal way to send away the flies from the house. The aroma that these herbs give out, along with the scent of the flowers, acts as a natural repellent for these flies, so the chances are that they won't be making it to the kitchen in the first place.
Ideal herbs could be basil, marigold, and bay leaves. They will not only be a fly repellent but also come in handy when cooking. Lavender and jasmine might be ideal options to grow in the garden to stop the fly infestation.
Vinegar and Dish soap
Vinegar is nature's fix for most problems, and it can come in handy to fix the fly infestation. A mix of vinegar with dish soap can help you trap flies. Mix about an inch of vinegar with a few drops of dish soap in a tall glass. Next, cover the glass with plastic wrap and secure it with a rubber band.
Poke holes on the top, and you have your natural fly trap. Flies will attract the vinegar in the glass and fly through the holes. But, with the dish soap, they will end up sinking instead of being able to land on the vinegar.
Cayenne Pepper and Water
Cayenne pepper comes in handy to repel houseflies. Make a mix with water, flush it into a spray bottle and spray it around the house. The odour released will force the flies to keep away.
Natural bait
If you cannot do either of the above, you could use food and drinks to bring the flies into traps. Use foods such as sugar, wine, fruit, or meat and lead them to traps.
Insecticides & Chemicals
Another option is to use a certain chemical in a low concentration to set up fly traps and remove the flies. When it comes to choosing an insecticide, you have few options available.
When there is a large housefly infestation, the ideal go-to option can be an insecticide since it is a quick solution. They aren't effective in the long run but get the job done. If you plan on using an insecticide, opt for a pyrethrin-based insecticide - one of the most common insecticides for indoor fly resistance.
Check the insecticide for indoor use, ventilate the area before use and always keep naked flames away.
Light trap
Light traps are commonly used options to trap flies. When flies travel through, they either be killed by the electric shock or trapped within the frame.
Position the light traps away from the windows but in a way where they will be in flies' way. They are not so effective but could prevent an infestation.
Sticky traps
Another minor and easy trap to set up and use is a sticky trap. You could lay it down or hang it around the house to trap flies, and this could be a fix if you have a few flies buzzing around.
Nipping it in the bud
Rather than looking for remedial measures, it is always best to prevent it from happening in the first place. Once you let in the flies, getting every fly away will be challenging.
