01 December 21 - 7 Ways to get your house clean for Christmas

We would be wrong if we didn’t say the last 12-16 months have been one of the most eventful of all. From worldwide lockdowns, working from home, Zoom lessons, daily sanitisation – we’ve been through all. It is safe to say that while most of us are returning to work and the kids returning to the classroom, our lives are in a little bit of disarray.

The kitchen isle went from single-purpose use to becoming the hub for all activities, the living room got a facelift to be the meeting space, and the bedrooms were left unattended. But one thing is sure – the adversity is slowly drifting away, and the opportunity is opening for us to celebrate Christmas just like the good old times.

The two holidays are rare occasions where the family comes together. It is time for the homemade meals, the catch-ups and warmth and comfort. This year will be even more special because there’s a glimpse of hope looking ahead to the new year of 2022.

Although there’s a lot that needs to be done before the big dates arrive – like shopping, cooking, decorating, you’ll need to spend a little time getting your home together as well. Its’ been a long 16-20 months, and prepping the house, looking for the irregularities and the loose ends needs to be done during this time.

So, for you to get started, here are seven essential cleaning and organisational to-do’s that will help you make your home sparkling clean this season, leaving you ample time to enjoy.

1 – Look after your carpets

Carpet is an important part of the home cleaning process

It can all look too easy when you take your carpets for granted but don’t forget the amount of footfall your carpets take on a daily basis. Increase that by at least five-fold because you and the rest of the family spent most of the last few months at home, and there’s added wear and tear.

Take a hard look at your carpets and see if any remnant strains need extra cleaning. If you own a pet, watch out for their fluff on the carpets. Sometimes no matter how hard you clean, there will still be a little bit of dust. Consider investing in a professional who could get the carpet back to looking brand new. Professionals take extra care in handling your carpet with shampoo to suck up the dirt and ensure that the carpet is as good as new.

2 – Clean all surfaces

Leave no top unturned

Your countertops will be in use constantly in the next few weeks, so ensure to give them a good clean before the all-important days arrive. The kitchen isle also might need a little bit of cleaning with all that occurred during the last few months. It is always a good practice to wipe surfaces after preparing your food, as uncooked meat might leave bacteria behind as well.

Also, just as you clean the tops, make sure you give your shelves, chairs and furniture a once-over to remove stains, dirt, or dust piled good. A good polish can go a long way.

3 - Do a professional oven clean

Nobody wants their food filled with grease so make sure to get the oven cleaned

The oven will get busy in the coming weeks with ample food set to be prepared. You can opt to clean the oven yourself to remove the grime and grease collected, but a professional can help you do this in a few easy steps. The last thing you want on Christmas is for your food to taste unpleasant, and a good clean up will ensure nothing of this nature happens.

4 - Clean up and organise guestroom and closets

Make the guests feel like they are at home by cleaning the guest room along with the rest

The chances are that you haven’t entertained guests for a while, and you’d have used up the guest room space for other needs or completely ignored them. If you plan to have family or friends over, you don’t want to make them feel uncomfortable. Also, you don’t’ want their suitcases cluttering the hallway. Run the vacuum through the room, watch out for dirt and prepare a set of clean linens to ensure your house guests feel as homely as possible.

5 - Time for some declutter

It might not be a usual cleaning routine for Christmas, but thinking of the last few months, it might be in the best interest to do some clearing out in the house. The previous twelve months have been all about removing all the unimportant items from home for most people.

By doing this, you will have more space for the Christmas tree, decorations and gifts to enjoy the holiday season. Ask yourself these questions;

“Have I used this item in the last six months?”

“Will I have any use of this item in the next few months?”

If the answer returns as a no, then you know what to do. You’ll be surprised how much extra space a quick cleanout can give you.

6 - Clean the bathrooms

A clean bathroom is always an essential

Cleaning the bathroom(s) is one of the things you don’t want to be doing in the middle of a holiday. Run thorough dust and sweep of the floor, tiles and fittings. Then make sure to apply a cleaner and get all the build-up and dirt around the fittings and shower. Use an all-purpose cleaner to wipe down towel racks, shelves and baseboards. Remove all the items from the usual spot and before getting started. A professional clean up could help in identifying the spots missed and have your fittings shining as new.

7 - Clean the decorations

Nobody wants dusty decorations on the Christmas tree, do they?

Finally, the decorations. Christmas decorations spend most of their time away in a cupboard or a dusty attic for the few days in the spotlight. Most of us usually try to re-use at least 70% of the decorations while investing in a few new ones. Make sure that when you take out the decorations from the storage, give a good clean before hanging them up to look as good as new.

When you start cleaning, make sure you check everything is working. Fairly lights are the tricky ones where the bulbs have a certain lifespan, and if one does not work, the entire set won’t work at times.

Test them before you put them up on the tree to know beforehand if you need to invest in a new set.

Happy Cleaning!

Now that you know what to do, it’s all about acting fast. The festive season will be arriving sooner than you expect, and when all that happens, you will have too many items on your bucket list that you end up missing the most important action item.
